Companies must satisfy a set of criteria to list under a specific index. Some of the most important indexes in the U.S. are the Standard &amp; Poor\u2019s 500 (S&amp;P 500) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many consider the <strong>S&amp;P 500\u00ae<\/strong> one of the best single assessments of large-cap U.S. equities. The index tracks the stock market performance of 500 leading companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges and covers approximately 80% of available market capitalisation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>O <strong>Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIJA)<\/strong> is a stock market index that monitors 30 major, publicly-owned blue-chip companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq. Charles Dow named the Dow 30 after himself. He established the index in 1986 with his business partner, Edward Jones. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t4trade.com\/pt\/markets\/shares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stock market<\/a> widely recognizes it as the most recognized index in the United Kingdom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People also call the <strong>Nikkei 225<\/strong>, the Nikkei, or the Nikkei Stock Average. It is an index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) and operates in Japanese Yen. The index is weighted by price. Every six months, analysts evaluate the components of the Nikkei 225. The index tracks the performance of 225 well-capitalized and highly liquid publicly traded companies in Japan. They also span a broad range of industries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>O <strong>Euronext 100 Index<\/strong> is a stock index featuring blue-chop companies on the pan-European exchange known as Euronext. It includes the 100 largest and most actively traded stocks on Euronext. To qualify, each stock must have at least 20% of its issued shares traded during the past one-year analysis period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-index-traders-do\"><strong>What do index traders do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An index trader seeks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t4trade.com\/pt\/markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">buy and sell financial instruments<\/a> tied to the value of indices instead of individual stocks. So, instead of trading stocks like <strong>NVIDIA<\/strong>, <strong>META<\/strong>, ou <strong>Microsoft<\/strong>, they will instead trade an entire index like the Dow Jones or S&amp;P 500. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Index traders are typically drawn to index trading because they consider it less unstable and less at risk of the volatility inherent in individual stock prices. One of the ways that an index trader will trade an index is by using CFDs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Um <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t4trade.com\/pt\/what-is-cfd-trading-and-how-it-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CFD (Contract for Difference)<\/a> is essentially an agreement between a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t4trade.com\/pt\/cfd-broker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CFD broker and a trader<\/a>, where the trader pays the difference in price between the opening and closing values of an index. If the trader believes the value of the underlying asset, i.e. the index, will rise, they are likely to go long (buy). If, however, the trader speculates that its value will fall, they may consider going short (sell). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.t4trade.com\/pt\/cfd-trading-and-t4trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Traders find CFDs popular because they are highly leveraged<\/a>, allowing them to open a larger position than their account balance could normally accommodate. The same stands true in the event of pandemics or environmental disasters which have the power to significantly impact supply chains, consumer demand, etc. This inevitably leads to a change in value of specific indexes that contain companies impacted by these occurrences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sixth<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Sixth, the <strong>strengthening and weakening of currencies<\/strong> may also cause the value of indexes to rise and fall. A weakening local currency for instance may result in a decrease of investments within a particular index, seeing the value of that index fall.
